CRUEL ENCHANTMENT ARCs

I have this lovely stack of ARCs to give away to book bloggers/reviewers. Do you have a blog? Do you review books? Interested in reviewing the second book of the Dark Magick series? If you are, please send me an email to anyabast (at) gmail.com with a link to your blog or where/how you would review the book.

I only have a limited supply of ARCs and I’m looking for maximum eyeball viewage, so blogs with lots of traffic will be weighted heavier in my selection process. Otherwise my decisions will be made on a first come, first serve basis. The only requirement I have is that the review be posted sometime during the first week of September, when the book releases. I will be holding a couple ARCs back for readers who don’t have book blogs/aren’t reviewers, so everyone will still have a shot at getting one. 🙂

In other news, an idea is percolating for a month-long contest here on my blog as a run up to the release of CRUEL ENCHANTMENT, so stay tuned for details.

Janece S. for NIGHT MYST who wrote, “Why should I win? Wellll, let’s see…my birthday is on the 13th, and either would make an awesome gift, but even more so, because I have been on a weight loss journey since the first of the year and I have lost 59lbs so far!! Hoping to lose a total of 100 lbs within the next year. I NEED a new book to read while I ride the stationary bikes, right??” (Great job, Janece)

Sue A. for INSATIABLE who wrote: “INSATIABLE is what I am and what I want! It is not easy being away from home, taking care of a sick family member for months on end. I’m homesick, I need to forget my troubles and release some stress and escape into a book for a while.” (Sue – I hope your family member feels better soon and you can get some relief.)

Pat C. for BONDS OF JUSTICE who wrote: ”I’ve never read any of her works and for this I don’t deserve to win! But this would be an excellent opportunity for me to begin to know her books. A win would also give me a chance to read my first paranormal!” (I’m sure you’ll love it, Pat)

New Release Heaven

Wow! There are a TON of books that either just came out or are coming out that deserve attention.

Nicole Peeler’s second book in her JANE TRUE series released last Tuesday. I loved the first book in this series, TEMPEST RISING. For me, the story always hinges on the characters and Jane True is an awesome heroine.

Tracking the Tempest begins four months–and one eyebrow sacrificed to magical training–after the close of Tempest Rising. During that time, Jane’s been busy honing her supernatural powers and enjoying her newfound sense of confidence.

Rockabill may not yet be heaven, but she’s realized it’s home. Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, however, and Ryu–Jane’s bloodsucker boyfriend–can’t let a major holiday go by without getting all gratuitous. This time his shenanigans involve a last-minute ticket to Boston and a hefty dose of direct interference in her life. But Ryu’s best laid plans inevitably create more upheaval than even he can anticipate, and Jane winds up embroiled in an investigation involving a spree of gruesome killings committed by a being of tremendous power . . .

. . . who, much to Jane’s surprise, happens to be another halfling.

Also out last Tuesday is the first book in Yasmine Galenorn’s new INDIGO COURT series, NIGHT MYST. Yasmine is well known for her Sisters of the Underworld series and I have no doubt that this one will be every bit as exciting.

Eons ago, vampires tried to turn the Dark Fae in order to harness their power. Instead, they created a demonic enemy more powerful than they dared to dream. Bent on enslaving the world, the Vampiric Fae have been quietly massing their strength for centuries. Now, Myst, queen of the Indigo Court, is rising again…and a long-prophesied war is brewing…

Born a witch, Cicely Waters can control the wind. When her Elemental warns her that her aunt and cousin are in danger, she packs her Pontiac GTO and returns home for the first time in twenty years. But the magical town of New Forest, Washington has changed. The Indigo Court holds the city in fear; people are vanishing, and strange deaths plague the town. Swept into an unexpected and passionate reunion with her trusted childhood friend Grieve, the Fae prince who taught her how to harness the wind, Cicely finds herself with a fierce and territorial lover. But Grieve has become enslaved by Myst’s court, and now both lovers must walk a fine line to survive the machinations of the Vampiric Fae Queen. Caught between two evils, both vying for supremacy, Cicely must fight for her family and her future. As she discovers the hidden secrets to her own heritage, will she lose her soul in the process?

Releasing next Tuesday is Lauren Dane’s INSATIABLE. Uhm. That cover makes me swallow my tongue every damn time. This is Dane’s third book in her smoking hot FEDERATION series.

Desire is the most dangerous sensation of all.

With tensions between the Federation and Imperial ‘Verses rising, one woman may hold the key to victory. The dangerous mission to smuggle her out of Imperial Territory falls to Daniel Haws and his team, the ultra secret Phantom Corps. This elite squad of the Federation Military is the only one trusted and skilled enough to remove her from under the watchful eye of her father, the Supreme Commander of the Imperial ‘Verses.

Carina is used to wearing a mask. Her father and his men think her little more than a pretty prize to be won by a man more ruthless than the rest. When he announces his intention to marry her to one of his henchmen, a man known for his cruelty, Carina knows she has to move as soon as possible to get out. But getting secret information to the Federation has served her well for years and she appeals to them for help.

She expected rescue from a man who’d been her enemy. But she wasn’t prepared for just how intense her attraction to Daniel Haws would be. Born as adversaries into different ranks, and on the run for their lives, they now need each other to survive–by holding on to the only thing they have in common: a growing desire that is dangerous, irresistible, and insatiable…

Finally, this Tuesday will also see the release of Nalini Singh’s BONDS OF JUSTICE, the next book in her incredibly popular Psy/Changeling series.

Max Shannon is a good cop, one of the best in New York Enforcement. Born with a natural shield that protects him against Psy mental invasions, he knows he has little chance of advancement within the Psy-dominated power structure. The last case he expects to be assigned is that of a murderer targeting a Psy Councilor’s closest advisors. And the last woman he expects to compel him in the most sensual of ways is a Psy on the verge of a catastrophic mental fracture…

Sophia Russo is a Justice-Psy, cursed with the ability to retrieve memories from men and women so twisted even veteran cops keep their distance. Appointed as Max’s liaison with the Psy, she finds herself fascinated by this human, her frozen heart threatening to thaw with forbidden emotion. But, her mind filled with other people’s nightmares, other people’s evil, she’s standing on the border between sanity and a silken darkness that urges her to take justice into her own hands, to become judge, jury…and executioner…

Whew! I think that’s it.

Okay, I’m giving away copy of EACH of these books. FOUR winners, total. For a chance to win, state your preferred title and why you think you deserve to win the book (go ahead and get outrageous). This contest is open to international entrants and is void where prohibited. You have until Midnight eastern time on Friday, July 2nd to post a comment. I’ll announce the winner on Saturday morning.

Confessions of a Writer Workaholic

Once upon a time, before I was a mom, I wrote only for epublishers and my schedule was fairly a set-my-own pace one. Life was busy and I had deadlines, but everything was fairly relaxed. Then I sold to a larger print house and became a mom all at the same time and things became (wonderful!) and a bit more frenetic.

I can still remember the stress I felt in the spring of 2007. My first NY book (Witch Fire) was set to release in June and we were weeks away from traveling to China to adopt our daughter. I was soon to be a new mother to a small child, my first mass market release was nigh, and I was under deadline. I spent most of the extremely long flight to Hong Kong working on Witch Blood.

This was the season when my life went from fa-la-di-dah to boom!di-dah!stress! Of course, I wouldn’t trade any of it for anything. I love my life, every little bit of it. After we brought our daughter home, I felt a lot like I’d been strapped to a speeding train for a while. Eventually things calmed down into a routine, my“new normal”.

Unfortunately my new normal involved working from dawn to midnight with sizable interruptions throughout. I ended up very little time to decompress, which is not a good thing for your health or creativity. Yet, I really had no choice if I wanted to meet my deadlines.

It has taken me a long time to work my life into a situation where I can get my work done in a large, interrupted span of time and be able to turn off my computer in the late afternoon (and leave it off) to spend some quality time with my family and have a little time to relax.

Uhm, it took me about three years.

And an interesting thing happened when I was finally able to achieve a good work/life balance; I felt guilty whenever I turned the computer off before eleven o’clock at night.

Maybe that’s something that happens to everyone who works at home. Maybe having your office or your laptop in the house makes you feel like you should be working all the time. Or maybe it’s just that I love my job or the fact I’m unreasonably paranoid about not making my deadlines. Whatever the reason, I went through a period when turning off the computer made me feel like I needed to turn it right back on again. Kinda crazy, huh?

It took awhile of shooting down that I should…. every time it popped up. Instead of saying I should work a little more… in my head, I would force myself to say I should relax tonight so I can be fresh in the morning….

These days I have much less of a problem with it than I did before. Now I happily turn off my computer at five or six and take the whole evening off. Sometimes I even take whole weekends off. Go me, right?

Are you a workholic or it is easy for you to leave you job at the office?

Summer Fun

Cross-posted to The Bradford Bunch

I can’t believe it’s already June. Where has the year gone? It seems like yesterday it was New Year’s Eve. I hope you’re all having a good summer so far.

I’ve been under some pretty tight deadlines, but have managed to squeeze in some fun here and there. We took a trip to the lovely NC beaches recently (may they forever stay lovely) and hit our first Renaissance Festival of the season on Saturday. There’s nothing like dressing up in twenty layers of clothing and walking around in 90 degree heat (it manages to be a blast, anyway).

Mostly I’ve been writing, though.

Right now I’m working on a novel called JADED, it’s the second of a short historical fantasy series I’m writing for Berkley Heat. The first book is entitled JEWELED and it releases in November. jeweled As you may be able to tell by that gorgeous cover, this two-book series is very hot menage a trois romance. You can read the first chapter here.

I turned in DARK ENCHANTMENT at the end of May, the third book of my Dark Magick series. CRUEL ENCHANTMENT (the second book) releases in September. cruel_enchantment_coversm You can read the first chapter of Cruel Enchantment here.

The other morning I woke up and said, “Great Scott! Cruel Enchantment’s release is just around the corner!” (Okay, I actually didn’t say, Great Scott, but you get the picture.) In any case, September will be here before I know it, considering how fast the first six months of 2010 have flown by. So I decided to implement some Summer Fun Contests to get ready for the release.

In June, July, August & September (probably October and November, too), I’ll be holding monthly contests on my two newsletters and my discussion list. If you’re not a member of any of these and you want to participant in the contests, now is the time to subscribe. Just please understand that if you join the discussion list, you’ll get…you know, discussion. Here are the links:

Writerspace newsletter (link is over on the left)
The Sultry Pen (Yahoogroups)
Silverpurr (Yahoogroups discussion loop)

And, just for the heck of it, since I haven’t held a contest over here in ages, leave a comment to this post before 5pm est on Friday, June 11th, and you’ll have a chance at an autographed copy of WICKED ENCHANTMENT. Winner will be chosen by random drawing. I’ll announce the winner after 5pm est on Friday. International entrants are always welcome. This contest is void where prohibited.

So, what are your plans for summer fun this year?

Back from RT 2010!!

I returned yesterday from RT 2010 and had a lovely time as usual. This year it was in Columbus, Oh, and, I have to say, I think this was my favorite hotel so far. The hotel was large, yet the rooms were close to the convention area and there were numerous food choices in and around the site. I had a great time meeting up with old friends and meeting new.

Here are a few of the pictures I pulled off my camera this morning for your enjoyment. 🙂
